Will virtual reality technology, such as Second Life, be our new way of life in the near future? Here are some reasons I believe we will all be spending 8 or more hours in virtual worlds:

1) Fuel prices will put added pressure on companies to allow for their employees to work from home. But,  people are designed to interact with one another. Virtual environments will allow people to do business in a “quasi in person” way.

2) Outsourcing jobs to other countries started out as just manufacturing, then to technology fields, customer support, and now it’s moving towards the accounting and legal fields. With so many people doing business scattered all over the globe, virtual forums will start to make more sense, because you will be able to have all of your employees in one virtual location.

3) Technology will catch-up soon. In order to do this right, we will need huge amounts of bandwidth (and it needs to be widely available and comonplace). Let’s face it, right now virtual sites like Second Life remind you of a video game more than real life, but of course that will change.

I predict that in the future, there will be a blurry line between the real world and the online world. What do you think?
